What is CBG?

Like many plants, the cannabis plant is made up of many different chemical compounds. Specific to cannabis, this genetic makeup is known as cannabinoids. CBG (cannabigerol) is a precursor to all hemp cannabinoids, with usually only around 1% of the plant being CBG. CBG-A (cannabigerolic acid) is the acidic, inactive form of CBG. This acidic form naturally gets converted into one of three paths: THC-A (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid), CBC-A (cannabichromenic acid), or CBD-A (cannabidiolic Acid). Ultraviolet light (sun rays), heat and time are the naturally occurring producers of this biosynthesis. (link to article)

How is CBG Maximized?

Cannabigerol is a cannabinoid found in only the younger cannabis plants. In order for cannabis growers to ensure the maximum percentage of CBG of their plants, they must harvest their crop at an earlier stage than normal or use hemp strains that naturally contain a higher amount of CBG. One of two options—or both—is necessary in order for a hemp grower to create a relatively strong CBG strain. Additionally, cannabis breeders have begun to selectively crossbreed strains to increase this percentage of CBG, and most importantly which strains and controlled environments push CBG conversion into CBD. What potentials does CBG offer?

The most interesting part to all this is the relationship it has to the human body. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) has be two main receptors in the brain, CB1 & CB2. The first is most associated to the nervous systems, and in short, this receptor is responsible for the maintenance of homeostasis in health and disease. The second receptor is most associated to inflammation and the immune system. With all the health related benefits becoming more widely known about CBD, this means that the overlap of CBG offers even more potential to homeopathic remedies! (link to article)
