CBD oil was discovered almost 80 years ago. However, it’s only been in the last decade or so that CBD products have risen in popularity. CBD now comes in all forms. Beyond CBD oil tinctures, we see salves, lotions, and creams to apply CBD topically on problem areas of the body such as aching joints. We see CBD vape juices that even come in fruity flavors. Many users prefer to consume their CBD in candy forms such as lollipops, gummy bears, and chocolate chews.
And as CBD culture becomes mainstream, it was only a matter of time before cafes started to infuse CBD oil into coffee. We already know that coffee alone offers many health benefits. There’s much research that shows that moderate coffee consumption may protect you from type 2 diabetes, liver disease, and Parkinson’s disease. It also may improve cognitive function, energy levels, and mood.
But what happens when you combine the benefits of coffee with the benefits of CBD?
CBD + Coffee Combo: Good or Bad?
While both coffee and CBD are known to offer amazing benefits, some question whether combining the two will result in a superfood bursting with nutritional value. There’s also some confusion over what will happen when the stimulating effects of caffeine meet the relaxing effects of CBD.
We know that caffeine improves alertness, increasing the heart rate, and helping people stay awake. CBD, on the other hand, has been used throughout history as an alternative medicine and believed to help calm people and promote better sleep. After drinking coffee, you feel energized and attentive. You drink coffee to feel that buzz to help you start or get through your day. So why would you introduce CBD to the mix knowing it may counter what you love most about your coffee?
However, some argue that caffeine and CBD is the perfect combination, particularly for those who are sensitive to caffeine’s stimulating effects but can’t resist a cup. We all respond to coffee differently. An expresso may leave one person jittery and up all night while it has little to no effect on someone else. Therefore, coffee infused with CBD may offer someone the kind of balance they seek – the right amount of alertness complemented with relaxation.
There’s also the concern of whether adding CBD to food or heating it affects the potency of the CBD. CBD oil does degrade over time even at room temperature and therefore, loses potency over long periods of time. As with most foods or drink, a cause of degradation is exposure to air at elevated temperatures; the same applies to CBD. Therefore, mixing in CBD in hot coffee may overheat the compound, causing it to lose its beneficial properties.
Ultimately, the best way to discover if CBD coffee is good for you is to try it yourself. It all boils down to how your unique body responds to CBD-infused coffee, and if you still enjoy the benefits of both.
